In November of 2007, members of the COPD community of Arizona came together at a summit meeting to establish a statewide coalition to identify and prioritize COPD needs and form working groups to address those needs.

What follows is a brief description of each work group and some of the tasks and projects that have been proposed. These descriptions are meant to provide a basis for thought and discussion for each work group as they determine their own direction over the next months and years ahead.

PATIENT EDUCATION

This workgroup focuses on increasing the empowering patients to better advocate for quality care and better understanding of COPD.

Potential projects:
Coordinate the posting of information on website www.breatheeasyaz.org
Hold educational symposiums
Develop a statewide resource directory and resource packet
Create and support patient support programs
Refer people to ALA helpline
Educate others on how to use equipment (inhalers, nebulizers, etc.)
Help to create, organize, and disseminate educational materials for patients
Assist in plan and set up early detection screenings in rural areas
Develop a bookmark that explains COPD, its symptoms, and steps to take

PROVIDER EDUCATION

This workgroup focuses on preparing healthcare professionals throughout Arizona in early detection and treatment methods.

Potential projects and activities:
Advise staff on appropriate spirometry techniques
Encourage the spirometric screenings on patients with risk factors
Encourage AAT testing
Create a handout for physicians to distribute to patients diagnosed with COPD
Treat patients aggressively
Educate physicians on risk factors for COPD
Educate on AAT
Educate on proper use of equipment
Encourage follow up care

ADVOCACY/GENERAL PUBLIC AWARENESS

This workgroup leads ongoing efforts to increase awareness and enlighten policy makers on COPD issues.

Activities may include: Get the word out to the adult population at large about symptoms, screenings, risk factors, resources
Create information packets for policy makers
Coordinate informational and educational meetings with policy makers
Publicize testing clinics, fundraisers
Media ads and events
Employee newsletters to large corporations, senior centers
Distribute info though insurance groups and pharmaceutical companies

The workgroups will meet in person or telephonically to determine priorities, set objectives, and assign tasks in order to achieve objectives. American Lung Association will provide support and resources.
